Dear SCHIMA Members and SC HIM
Professionals,
Please join me in thanking all who worked to plan and orchestrate the 2010
SCHIMA State Convention in Greenville, South Carolina. The event was fabulous
from Registration, Food/Beverage (YUM!), through acquiring Vendorsand
scheduling a wide variety of Speakers, and our feedback from those attending
the event has been very positive to date.
We will be doing something a bit different this year in that we will be sharing
the aggregate survey feedback from all events start with the 2010 Annual
Convention and Exhibit via the web starting in late August. We will
also be publishing a post-Convention eZine in September to share
information from the event including statistics,
award biographies, and photos, as well as follow-up on some of
the comments made via the Convention survey to provide more transparency
to all of our membership regarding SCHIMA events. The more our
members know and understand about the organization, the better we can make
the organization going forward!
As many of you know, I am very passionate about the Health Information
Management profession and I love to infuse that passion to the masses.
I implore each SCHIMA member to share YOUR passion for YOUR profession
to YOUR community. Make an opportunity to share who the HIM
professionals is at area events.
We want to assure that the communities of South Carolina are aware of our
expertise in the upcoming development and implementation of all facets of
ARRA and ICD-10. This is our domain and it is our
responsibility to assure that HIM professionals are recognized as the “Real
Leadership in a Time of Real Change.”
The 2010-2011 SCHIMA Board will begin our year with a Strategic Planning
session on September 10, 2010. YOU are the key factor to the success of this
Board and our association. As we develop this year’s goals, we will depend on
the members to share in carrying out those goals and share in the success of
our State Association.
In an effort to provide Board transparency, those goals and Board Meeting
minutes will be posted to the SCHIMA website. Members can then follow
and inquire about the Board's progress on initiatives, goals and issues as it
happens, which will help the organization's leaders and volunteers stay on
the coursc that best represents our priorities and mission.
But to make the organization truly yours, we have to have
something from you: your constructive feedback (and not just about
events you have attended). Throughout the upcoming year, each member
will be expected to provide their opinions via surveys. We truly want to
represent our members so make your voice known by taking a few minutes to
complete the surveys as they are “blasted” out to you through e-mail.
Wasting no time, you have already received your first survey. As mentioned at
the President’s Luncheon/Business Meeting at the State Convention, other
states and AHIMA are exploring an action item of incorporating “informatics”
in our national and state association name:
American Health Information Informatics Management Association-AHIIMA
South Carolina Health Information Informatics Management
Association-SCHIIMA
The SCHIMA Executive Board will then proceed by representing the majority vote
of South Carolina’s members on this and future surveys.
I hope the key take away from this message is that this is a
partnership. SCHIMA Executive Board’s ultimate goal reflects that of
AHIMA’s Board and that is to insure that the association is financially
sustaining and that members receive valuable resources for “leadership and
innovation in health information management for the healthcare industry and
its consumers” with those finances. We will be accountable to our members and
strive “to continuously improve our performance as your governing body.”
In closing, I would like to share with you a quote that was in Jeanne
Sexson’s 2010 Annual Convention keynote presentation handout:
The Essence of Passion
“Passion is powerful…nothing was ever achieved without it and nothing can
take its place. No matter what you face in life, if your passion is great
enough, you will find the strength to succeed. Without passion, life has no
meaning. So put your heart, mind and soul into even your smallest acts…this
is the essence of passion.
This is the secret to life.” (Author Unknown)
Be passionate about your profession and share that PASSION with
everyone. Volunteer for your association even the smallest act is
powerful. YOU will want to be part of the 2011 SCHIMA (or SCHIIMA)
State Convention! I sincerely thank you for allowing me to share my passion
and serve SCHIMA,

Dear SCHIMA Members and SC HIM
Professionals,
Please join me in thanking all who worked to plan and orchestrate the 2011
SCHIMA State Convention in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The event was
fabulous from Registration and Food/Beverage through the President’s
Reception at Ripley’s Aquarium. Those
who missed it truly missed a treat.
We scheduled a wide variety of
Speakers, and our feedback from those attending the event has been very
positive to date. I encourage everyone personally to take a
moment to thank all of the vendors you work with in your daily jobs
whose companies participated in the 2011 State Convention, as the support of
our exhibitors, sponsors and corporate partners is critical to the success of
both our profession and State Convention. Also, be sure to ask
those vendors who did not participate this year to get involved at our next
State Convention in Columbia.
We will continue to share survey feedback from events as well as follow-up on
some of the comments made via the Convention survey to provide more
transparency to all of our membership regarding SCHIMA events. We will
also be doing more surveys to get a better understanding of what are our
members’ needs. Your
constructive feedback (and not just about events you have attended) will
give us an idea as far as what direction the organization should be
moving. Throughout the upcoming year, each member will be expected to
provide their opinions via surveys. We truly want to represent our members so
make your voice known by taking a few minutes to complete the surveys as they
are “blasted” out to you through e-mail.
The more our members know and
understand about the organization, the better we can make the organization
going forward! We are living in
challenging (Some say interesting and others difficult.) times and if we are
to survive as an organization and profession we must change with the
times. Please respond to the
surveys. Don’t complain later if you
do not voice your opinion at the time of the surveys. The SCHIMA Executive Board will then
proceed by representing the majority vote of South Carolina’s members on the
results of the surveys.
SCHIMA
Membership Quick Survey 1: November 2011
The 2011-2012 SCHIMA Board began our
year with a Strategic Planning session on September 16, 2011. YOU are the key factor to the success
of this Board and our association. We have developed this year’s goals but,
we will depend on the members to share in carrying out those goals and share
in the success of our State Association.
One of our goals this year is to
increase voter turnout and volunteerism.
I am very passionate about the Health Information Management
profession and we are working in tumultuous times. Your vote and involvement is more important
than ever.
Our organization and profession
cannot succeed without your participation whether that’s mentoring, voting,
volunteering or any number of other ways.
I implore each SCHIMA member to share YOUR passion for
YOUR profession thru YOUR activities. Be sure to do your
part. Our survival as an organization
and profession in the future depends on YOU.
We want to assure that the communities
of South Carolina are aware of our expertise in the upcoming development and
implementation of all facets of ARRA and ICD-10. We have ICD-10 training sessions
planned across the three regions of South Carolina. The training begins in January of 2012 thru
September 2013. Our team of trainers
will cover every facet of education for SCHIMA’s coders and those interested
outside of the state.
In an effort to continue to provide Board transparency, those goals and Board
Meeting minutes will be posted to the SCHIMA website. Members can then
follow and inquire about the Board's progress on initiatives, goals and
issues as it happens, which will help the organization's leaders and
volunteers stay on the course that best represents our priorities and
mission.
SCHIMA Executive Board’s ultimate goal reflects that of AHIMA’s
Board: to ensure that the association is financially self-sustaining,
and that members receive valuable resources for “leadership and innovation in
health information management for the healthcare industry and its consumers”
through the careful use of those resources. We will be accountable to our
members and strive “to continuously improve our performance as your governing
body.”
The key take away from this message is “Teamwork
and Volunteerism”. There is a
saying that “No Man (Or Woman) is an island”.
Simply put, “You can’t do it all by yourself”. This organization cannot succeed with the
help of just one, or two, or ten individuals.
It needs us all.
Volunteering for your association does not have to be a
year-long, full-time commitment - even the smallest act is powerful. We
need YOU to be part of the 2012 SCHIMA CSA!
I sincerely thank you for allowing me
to share my passion and serve SCHIMA,
Kenneth D. Clyburn, RHIA
2011-2012 SCHIMA President
